1. Wake him/her up with a smile:

All to often we become preoccupied with our everyday challenges. We rush through our days and forget to stop and enjoy the little things. We as parents owe it to our children to make time. So take the time to wake your precious child up with a gentle nudge and a kiss on the forehead . Not only will your child’s day start on a wonderful note, so will yours. Even as adults we love someone to wake us up with a kiss and some coffee! Maybe breakfast… hint, hint. LOL.

2. Share a meal:

Share at least one meal with your child. Whether it be breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Demonstrate the correct way to sit down at the table and share a meal. Although toddlers can’t speak, they are most certainly starting to understand the meaning of certain words and phrases and will enjoy having a parent/toddler conversation. You can talk about most anything. Be creative with your conversation!

3. Go for a walk:

Pull out the old stroller, grab a water bottle and head out! Whether you go for a walk around the block or head out to your local park your child will most definitely enjoy getting out of the house! Make sure to point out all the different trees, flowers, etc. Maybe even sing a song! Although I’m not sure how the people around you will feel about the singing!

4. Stop and explore nature:

Whether you’re at the park or in your backyard, there will always be something to explore! Everything is new to a toddler! Under your supervision, let him/her grab the newly fallen leaves, play with the rocks, and grab some dirt. In the age of hand sanitizer we all to often try to shield our kids from everything- including nature. Let your kid be a kid!

5. Read to him/her:

Although toddlers usually have the attention span of an ant, take ten minutes to read them a book! Make sure there are few words and lots of pictures! Try to read with expression and don’t be afraid to look silly! Have fun with it! Your child may end up loving to read- which is a “win, win”, right?!!

6. Sit and take the time to play:

Pull out the blocks, toy cars, musical instruments, toy dishes, baby dolls- whatever your toddler enjoys. Let your toddler take the lead and you follow! The sky is the limit! Your toddler will have a blast!

7. Watch your child’s favorite show together:

Turn on the old boob tube, grab a seat on the couch or in your favorite chair together and sing, clap, whistle, stomp, and turn in circles! (Guess you’d have to get up for that, Lol) Your toddler will enjoy seeing you enjoying what they enjoy! So ham it up! My son is currently obsessed with YO GABBA GABBA! He would watch it all day, everyday if we’d let him! So you can only imagine the pure silliness that goes on at my house! Pssst- If you’ve never watched Yo Gabba Gabba! check it out and you’ll see what I mean!

8. Praise your child:

“You are wonderful. You are smart. You are handsome. You can do anything.” Instill self worth in your toddler early. If your toddler starts with a strong foundation now there will be no way for someone to knock him/her down later! You are your child’s first cheerleader! Make sure to reinforce this in your toddler everyday!

9. Make bath time fun:

Even bath time is a chance to teach your toddler! Make up a bath time song about washing their body! Sing the ABC’s; Show him/her how to wash their hair and body.

10. Tuck them in and kiss them goodnight:

When you tuck in your toddler at night ask him/her how their day went. Although they may not be able to answer now, soon enough you will get a long drawn out answer- you know, the kind that will prolong bedtime! You’ll be surprised about the funny and creative stories you’ll hear!
